Subject : Swahili and Education!

I would to comment as follows:-

    1. This subject was partly introduced in the Globalisation forum on 9/23/2003 as “Introducing Swahili in Higher Education Self Defeat in Globalisation”. Historically, Tanganyika (Tanzania mainland) was a Germany Colony during the Adolf Hitler war. There are only two countries in Southern Africa that were the German’s rule, namely Namibia and Tanganyika. The remnant of this colonial rule is seen in the old government buildings in Tanga for example the Regional Commissioners building. My grandfather could speak perfect German language. He could also speak perfect Swahili.
    2. Unfortunately, Swahili is not our language since it’s a combination of several languages.
    3. “I had the privilege of being educated both in the Colonial era of Tanganyika and the independent Tanganyika and Tanzania. Besides my grandfather Sheikh Ali bin Hemed Albuhri was one of the Swahili scholars who composed the Swahili Dictionary (Kamusi ya Kiswahili kwa Kiswahili). His son the late Sheikh Mohammed Ali (Well known at the University of Dar es Salaam) continued in educating Swahili by participating in debates in Radio Tanzania and in religious teachings. Swahili was introduced as examination subject at form IV level (Cambridge Examination) in 1962. The meaning was to introduce Swahili as a second administrative language in Tanzania. Let us make it so even today. I do completely agree with Professor Scarlets and Mtanzania. Swahili is a very complex language and there are many Arabic terms in it such as SALAAM (peace). The name of Dar es Salaam (Arabic term found even in the Holy Qur’an) meaning “The peaceful harbour”. We can even find Spanish terms like “MENZA” which we call MEZA having double meanings a table and to swallow. Let us make Swahili as one of the art subjects at University level and conduct research and translate books even scientific books “
    4. Zanzibar and Pemba was governed by Sultan (of Oman). The Arabic language was dominating in the Islands.
    5. When Tanganyika was a trusteeship country under UK through the United Nations. Our masters taught us English but they also preserved Swahili that was dominating in the coastal area (Tanga Region, Dar es Salaam, Lindi, Mtwara, Pemba, Zanzibar, Tabora) partly in Mwanza, Moshi, etc.
    6. Swahili then became “Our Language” and we are proud of it as it unites all the existing tribes in Tanzania.
    7. Yes we have to admit that we are “undeveloped and have inferiority complex”.
    8. We have to ask the President, VP,PM and our MP’s as to what is the first word you called your mother when you started to speak? Did you call her “Mama, mother, mamy, mor or what? If they answer “Mama” that is their mother tongue and they have to respect it.
